I had the good fortune over this past weekend by travelling to Otaki Golf Club for their annual Easter weekend tournament.
I was doubly fortunate to be in the company of Foxton Pennants Player Brad Ryder ( read on..). The competition was Gross, Nett and Stableford with a capacity feild in attendance mainly made up of local members, with a few outsiders including two from Foxton Golf Club.
The course was an absolute pleasure to play with Fairways and Greens in top condition given the dry spell of weather most of the country has experienced. There are holes with allevated greens and others with raised tee boxes adding plenty of character to this picturesque layout.
For Brad Ryder many of the Par 4 holes were a Drive and Pitch, however one still needed to be very accurate as the Greens were well guarded by strategic Sandtrap and Pin placements.
Brad Ryder went into the Tournament as the top ranked player on a One Handicap and duly obliged with a 73 Gross taking out the top prize. He didnot have it all his own way as on handicap (thankfully..) I was fortunate to win the private 'haggle' and the best Nett prize. For Brad it was his first visit to Otaki and naturally he enjoyed the atmosphere, for me it was only my second visit having played once before about twenty years ago.
A big thanks so much to Otaki Golf Club for allowing us to play and for the wonderful hospitality shown with beautiful catering and Bar facilities to complement the beautiful golf-course.
A link to the Otaki Golf Club website and if you ever get an opportunity to play the course (especially a tournament) you will find the hospitality outstanding.
